Every wonder what the difference is between a flower garden, a vegetable garden, and a botanical garden? We see the word everywhere, on hair care products and creations of that nature, but what does it really mean? A flower garden is quite obviously a garden that one plants a variety of flowers in and a vegetable garden is quite obviously a garden the vegetables are cultivated. A botanical garden is a garden that is more or less planted and documented and cultivated for scientific purposes. That definition seems a little broad, so let’s look a little further.
A garden that is used in a display to educate is a botanical garden. That means whether it contains herbs, vegetables, flowers, or even weeds, if it is on display to teach something about nature, flora, fauna, or cultivation, then it is considered a botanical garden.
A garden that is planted to provide research materials on plants, their growing patterns, their possible uses, or their natural habitat is also considered a botanical garden. Originally, botanical gardens were created for university studies and educating the future botanists of the world. Over time, however botanical gardens were created by companies to learn more about the natural ingredients that were sought in the products they were creating, museums to encourage public awareness and education, individual botanists to discover how to introduce new plants into the market place, either for gardening or for health purposes, and every day gardeners for the purposes of creating new plants, or learning how grow plants that are foreign to the region.
Botanical gardens have been set up to all over the world in an effort to alleviate distressed plant populations or even to attempt to bring back extinct plant species. Botanical gardens play a much larger role in our society than we realize. Botanical gardens are essential in the creation of medicines, herbal supplements and even lotions.
A botanical garden can also consist of plants that are used in products such as hair care products, or anything else that uses plant extracts. These botanical gardens are sufficiently large, and typically the extracts are not taken directly from the botanical garden, but the botanist for the company can learn how to get more plant per planting and cultivate more extract from one single botanical garden. Frogs
What would a garden be without some frogs and toads? They are likely attracted to your garden as it is, but you can add a few elements to attract even more of them. Since frogs and toads love water you might think of installing a garden pond, or at the very least a small water feature low to the ground that they can breed in. They will thank you by helping to control small insects and slugs.
Lady Bugs
Ladybugs love to eat aphids so you want to attract as many of them as you can into your garden. You probably recognize them as an adult with a red and black dotted shells but you might not easily recognize the lava which is gray in color with orange dots. Don’t mistake the larva for a past as these lover can chow down more aphids than the adults. Ladybugs like Cosmos, scented geraniums and even dandelions so be sure to have plenty of those in your garden.
Ground Beetles
Ground beetles like to make their home under stones or leaf covers and sleep all day coming out at night to feed on garden pests. They have quite an appetite Emil Chow down slugs, snails, cutworms and leather jackets and the lava or egg stage. Some will even climb up in the trees to get a good meal and can eat gypsy moth and tent caterpillars. you can encourage these as you garden are providing permanent plantings for them to live under, loose leaf cover or small stones.
Birds
Who doesn’t want birds in their garden? While these might be considered pests for some vegetables they can also read your garden of pests such as caterpillars, grubbs, slugs and aphids which they feed on. have a little bird bath in your garden as well as some nesting boxes to encourage birds into the garden where they might see a tasty grub they might want to feast on.
Lacewings
Lacewings, or the larva of lace wings feed on aphids and small soft bodied pests. To attract bees, make sure you have a water source and plant lots of nectar and pollen flowers as they like to lay their eggs underneath the leaves of these plants.
With a little bit of strategic planning, you can attract these predators into your garden which will not only help control the pests but will also add interest to the garden. Plus, it’s a lot more fun to plant particular flowers and put out sources of water to attract birds, beetles and frogs into your garden than it is to drag out the sprayer hose and douse your garden with chemicals! Not only will you be getting rid of pests on your plants, you’ll also be providing a food source for the predators and keeping the environment free of chemicals!
The popularity of organic food and gardening has certainly increased over the last few years. Not only does it give you a sense of well being but people love the beauty of wonderful colored flowers and the taste of vegetables they helped create. Organic gardening tips on how to successfully start and care for an organic garden are becoming easier to find as this type of gardening continues to become more popular. Along with being relaxing, it is a very interesting hobby. It does not matter if you live in the country or city; you can find somewhere to grow a container garden, even if it is just a small one. If you do live in the city, instead of using your balcony to store bikes or your barbeque, create a gorgeous, relaxing outdoor retreat by using container gardening and following a few tips. Choose containers that are colorful but won’t detract from the plants you plan to use. Use pots that are different in shapes and sizes. Select your plants carefully so that they compliment each other and fit well in the spot designated for your container garden.
For gardening on balconies that are very long or narrow, use shrubs, different height trees and plants at the ends and corners, to add interest and round out the hard lines. Create points of interest by grouping bright colors and interesting shapes together. More tips for container gardening are to keep repeating a plant grouping or plant throughout your balcony area and use colorful flowers for accents only. Show off your large plants, shrubs and trees, by using interesting shapes and bright, beautiful colors. For gardening on your balcony, consider how your garden looks from inside your house. Use fertilizer monthly or check the label to see the recommendations and follow them. Weeding is usually not a problem with balcony gardens.
